Lessons Learned? Steelers Feb 16, 2010
Well at least the Black and Gold team won the Super Bowl!
And it was a reasonable entertaining bowl at that. What did we learn?

I would like to think that we learned that one dimensional teams can’t win a Super Bowl. But frankly the fact that the Colts made it to the Bowl kind of makes my rant about passing too much suspect. Although let’s be realistic, the Colts did not exactly face juggernaut teams to get there. And the Ravens should have beaten them. Baltimore turnovers gave Manning to many possessions.
Oh well. So Drew Brees had his day and a potpourri of a backfield got enough touches to keep things balanced. Not exactly. They ran the ball 18 times and threw the ball 39 times! The Colts ran the ball 19 times and threw 45 times! And they surprisingly averaged 5.2 yards per carry.
The lesson I have learned is, I don’t understand the NFL anymore. Balance and execution win but teams don’t seem to care. Yes I know that the rules favor receivers and quarterbacks. And I see the numbers. But it doesn’t seem to me that teams who threw twice as much have anything other than yards to show for their efforts.
Ironically the Saints do run a little more of a balanced offense and they did rank among the leaders in points. And the Colts did score their share of points. Both teams won their share also.
This season did also feature a ton of pathetic teams also.
So what about the Steelers and 2010?
- I still think they need to scale back the passing attempts by a small percentage and run a little more.
- Get another back to complement Mendenhall and Moore.
- Solidify O – line.
- Fix D Line or get healthy there.
- Another linebacker.
- Fix secondary. It can’t all be on Polamalu.
- Emphasize touchdowns not yardage gained from scrimmage. Ball control is still important. Especially in 2nd half of games.
- 4th quarter? Bad conditioning?
Next stop, combine!
