Lessons Learned? Steelers Feb 16, 2010

Welcome to Steeler Maniacs where fans can come together and talk about our beloved Steelers. The STeelers won the Super Bowl last year and we think they can do it again! Here We Go Steelers!

Well at least the Black and Gold team won the Super Bowl!

And it was a reasonable entertaining bowl at that. What did we learn?

I would like to think that we learned that one dimensional teams can’t win a Super Bowl. But frankly the fact that the Colts made it to the Bowl kind of makes my rant about passing too much suspect. Although let’s be realistic, the Colts did not exactly face juggernaut teams to get there. And the Ravens should have beaten them. Baltimore turnovers gave Manning to many possessions.

Oh well. So Drew Brees had his day and a potpourri of a backfield got enough touches to keep things balanced. Not exactly. They ran the ball 18  times and threw the ball 39 times! The Colts ran the ball 19 times and threw 45 times! And they surprisingly averaged 5.2 yards per carry.

The lesson I have learned is, I don’t understand the NFL anymore. Balance and execution win but teams don’t seem to care. Yes I know that the rules favor receivers and quarterbacks. And I see the numbers. But it doesn’t seem to me that teams who threw twice as much have anything other than yards to show for their efforts.

Ironically the Saints do run a little more of a balanced offense and they did rank among the leaders in points. And the Colts did score their share of points. Both teams won their share also.

This season did also feature a ton of pathetic teams also.

So what about the Steelers and 2010?

  • I still think they need to scale back the passing attempts by a small percentage and run a little more.
  • Get another back to complement Mendenhall and Moore.
  • Solidify O – line.
  • Fix D Line or get healthy there.
  • Another linebacker.
  • Fix secondary. It can’t all be on Polamalu.
  • Emphasize touchdowns not yardage gained from scrimmage. Ball control is still important. Especially in 2nd half of games.
  • 4th quarter? Bad conditioning?

Next stop, combine!

Do You Agree With Kevin? (Steelers Jan 19)

Kevin Colbert is Director of Football operations for our Pittsburgh Steelers. He recently sat down and chatted with Bob Labriola for an exclusive interview on the 2009 season.

Bob first threw out the question of how Kevin regarded the 2009 season. He highlighted the milestones of Ben Roethlisberger and his first 4,000+ passing yards (Franchise [...]

Too Little, Too Late (Steelers win Jan 3)

Goo Goo Ga Ga time as we pretend we are happy finishing with a win. The fact is this was another poorly played game as a whole. And I am going to also take a couple shots at Mike Tomlin also. But we will put that on hold for a second.
Let’s take a look [...]

Miami, Here We Come (Steelers/Dolphins Preview)

I  wish I could say we were this close to coming back to Miami, oh excuse me South Florida, on 2/07/10 but I can’t. And neither can anyone else.
Of course at this very moment it is not impossible…………………..
Who am I kidding? Even if we were to make the playoffs would there be any reason to [...]

Ravens Extend Christmas (Steelers Win Dec 27)

The old escape artist trick was on display at Heinz Field as the Steelers ….make that Stealers ……. somehow win against the bumbling Ravens.
Thanks to the Ravens giving spirit the Steelers win 23 to 20 to assure at least an 8 and 8 season. Whoopee! Yes 11 Baltimore penalties, some at mysteriously perfect timing, 3 turnovers, [...]

The Grudge Match (STEELERS/RAVENS Dec 27 PREVIEW)

For all the marbles? Probably not. Fact is we lost our marbles a few weeks ago. When you lose to the 3 worst teams in the league all in the same year …….. well what is there really to get excited about?
Oddly enough the AFC North is still attainable. The Bengals at 9 and 5 [...]

To Run Or Not To Run (DEC 23)

If you have been following along here than you are well aware of my loathing for the 48 pass/19 rush attempt games. Yes of course there are circumstances that present themselves that require the passing game to kick into over drive. But this usually not the case with the 2009 Steelers.
A vast majority of their [...]

LAST SECOND WIN (Steelers Dec 20 game)

An amazing finish to another embarrassing 4th quarter. Yeah I don’t want to sound negative but I am a realist.
Oh don’t get me wrong I am happy with the win and the fact that the boys didn’t give up and say who cares. But we are technically the defending Super Bowl Champions. We are [...]
